City Council

The city of Winston-Salem is run by an eight-member City Council. Every four years in November, voters choose the Mayor and Council Members. The Mayor is elected by the whole city, while Council members are elected by the residents in each of the city’s eight wards.

The City Council makes the rules and laws to keep the city running smoothly. They approve the city budget, set property taxes, and decide on fees for services. The Council also hires the city manager and city attorney and approves members for city boards and commissions.

All City Council and Council Committee meetings are open to the public.
